What is Machine Vision?

Machine vision is a technology that enables machines to interpret and process visual information from the real world, typically for inspection, measurement, identification, or guidance tasks in automation. It relies on specialized imaging devices and software to analyze visual data.

Common types of vision hardware include industrial cameras like area scan cameras, which capture full 2D images at once, and line scan cameras, which build images line by line—ideal for inspecting continuous materials.

Smart cameras
combine image capture and processing in a compact unit, streamlining integration and reducing system complexity.

3D stereo cameras
use dual lenses to perceive depth, enabling precise spatial measurements and object recognition in three dimensions.

Meanwhile, smart code readers and handheld code readers specialize in reading barcodes or QR codes, aiding in traceability and logistics.

Altogether, these tools form the foundation of machine vision systems across many industries.

What is machine vision used for?

Machine vision is widely used across industries to automate inspection, measurement, identification, and guidance tasks with high speed and accuracy.

In manufacturing, it inspects parts for defects, ensures correct assembly, and verifies label information. Automotive production lines rely on machine vision to measure components, check weld quality, and guide robotic arms. In electronics, it inspects solder joints and verifies circuit board integrity. Pharmaceutical and food industries use it to ensure packaging accuracy, check expiration dates, and detect contaminants.

Logistics and warehousing
benefit from smart and handheld code readers to track packages and manage inventory efficiently.

3D stereo cameras
enable bin picking and object positioning in automation, while smart cameras and area/line scan cameras provide compact and powerful solutions for visual inspection and surface analysis.

Overall, machine vision enhances productivity, improves quality control, and reduces human error across many critical sectors.
